2010 LEATHERSTOCKING REGIONAL ENVIROTHON
held at
GLIMMERGLASS STATE PARK
On Wednesday, April 28, 2010 high school students from Otsego and Montgomery counties competed in the 2010 Leatherstocking Regional Envirothon at Glimmerglass State Park, Cooperstown, New York. There were eleven teams of five members each competing in the hands-on environmental competition.
The teams competed in five environmental categories: forestry, wildlife, soils & land use, aquatics ecology, and a current issue. This year’s current issue is "Protection of Groundwater through Urban, Agricultural & Environmental Planning." Each five member team works as a team answering questions & performing tasks such as: entering a soils pit to determine the soils, testing the water flow, identifying wildlife and determining the growth, species, and age of trees.
The top winner in Otsego County was Oneonta High School with a score of 426. Second place winner was Milford Central School Team B with a score of 395 and the Otsego Area OCC Senior Team B took third with a score of 380.
The Otsego County Soil & Water Conservation District presents the top winner in Soils with the Elizabeth V. Stein Memorial Award. This year Oneonta High School Team Architeuthis won with a score of 76.
The Oneonta High School team advances to the New York State Envirothon which will be held at Keuka College, Keuka Park, NY on June 2-3, 2010. Last year Oneonta on placed 8th overall at the 2009 NYS Envirothon event, so we are looking forward to this year's regional winner to place in the top ten at the NYS event.
NYS Envirothon first winners will advance to the 2010 Canon Envirothon to be held in Fresno University at the Fresno, California.
This year California will host the 2010 Canon Envirothon, which is the final step in the Envirothon completion for the top winners from through out the United States and Canada.
